Role of convection–circulation coupling in the propagation mechanism of the Madden–Julian Oscillation over the Maritime Continent in a climate model

Abstract This study investigates the role of convection–circulation coupling on simulated eastward propagation Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) over Maritime Continent (MC). Experiments are conducted with European Centre Hamburg Model Version 5 (ECHAM5) coupled one-column ocean model—Snow-Ice-Thermocline (SIT) and two different cumulus schemes, Nordeng-Tiedtke (E5SIT-Nord) Tiedtke (E5SIT-Tied). During early phase MJO composites, E5SIT-Nord simulation reveals stronger intraseasonal anomalies in apparent heat source ( Q 1 ) convective center, however, E5SIT-Tied produces a background , suggesting that deep convection prevails MC but does not couple circulation. Similarly, simulation, in-column moisture is kept mostly by local MC, which contrast to well-correlated relationship between anomaly circulation E5SIT-Nord. A case based an observational similar biases concerning emerges within few days simulations. The weaker heating at center than after model initiation, resulting subsidence east less favorable for propagation. present findings highlight instantaneous responses parameterization schemes MJO-related environmental changes can further affect variability through altering MC. Physical moist essential realistically represent this thereby improve MJO.
